recovering orphaned file on chkdsk

My computer has been slowing down a lot. I did a re-start and got a blue screen. The only option I could figure out was to push the power button on the tower. It turned off and I waited a minute and pushed it again, hit f8 and got it into safe mode. Did a chkdsk and scheduled a chkdsk/f for the next re-start. I re-started, the chkdsk/f started and
in part 2, I saw "recovering orphaned file ntuser.tmp 22258 into directory file 98980".
The computer then worked for another week or so but was still somewhat slower than I am used to. I got the blue screen again and had to perform the same operation and
received the same "recovering orphaned.........." as before. I don't know how to proceed or what I am doing wrong. Please help.
Thanks

Try a CHKDSK /R from safe mode. This will run a block check and move recoverable data to a safe place on the hard drive, and mark unsafe areas as "bad" so the OS doesn't try to use them again.

Besides that good advice, you might want to check the drive, too. How old is the drive?

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:
HD Tune
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)

Hard Drive Manufacturers' Diagnostic Utilities Links:
TachTech
